Overview of R&D

Japan, facing a world-leading low birth rate and aging population, is in urgent need of structural shift to a "Self-Managing Healthy Society" where "one takes care of one's own health, aged people support the society together with the younger generation, and GNI (gross national income) is increased as a result of the creation of a new health and medical industry." To realize a "Self-Managing Healthy Society," it is imperative to develop an innovative system for prophylaxis, diagnosis, and treatment that dramatically reduces hospitalization and visits to the doctor’s office, and to create a new business model for a health and medical guidance service based on scientific evidence to stay "healthy at home." The COI aims at the maintenance and improvement of health, based on the utilization of medical information.

The COI has three features:

  1. It has the Medical, Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Sciences Schools that generate cutting-edge science and technology seeds, and the University Hospital that provides the medical needs within the same perimeter of the University’s Hongo campus.
  2. It has established a close network with the regulatory and standardizing agencies.
  3. It has access to abundant investment business funds that reduces corporate development risk.

Taking advantage of these features, the COI aims at drastically reducing time and cost from research and development to social implementation, by promoting the formation of an Open Innovation Platform, where Under One Roof, every stakeholder from industry, government, academia and private sector joins the program as equals from the start. The probability of success for social implementation is enhanced by assigning two full-time members with industry experience to manage the organization. The Healthy Long Life Loop Society is a device designed to promote multidisciplinary collaboration including companies outside the network of current members, and collaboration with other COI sites, to establish an original model to realize a seamless "connection" from sick care to health care, unachievable by anyone other than this COI. The Todai COI model shall be deployed throughout Japan, making challenges towards various regulatory reforms, and accelerating the social implementation of the fruit of research and development.
